Tomatec in Bias in the Lot et GaronneWhy do we grow in greenhouses?
We have been farmers and market gardeners for four generations. Today we are convinced that greenhouse crops have a future because they allow:
Plant protection: Greenhouse crops are protected from bad weather and disease, which reduces the use of pesticides and increases yields.
Climate control: Greenhouses help create an optimal environment for plant growth by controlling temperature, humidity and light. This makes it possible to grow tomatoes even in difficult climates.
Water saving: Automated irrigation systems significantly reduce water consumption compared to growing in the ground.
Improved quality: Tomatoes grown in greenhouses are generally sweeter and juicier than those grown outdoors because they receive optimal light and an ideal temperature.
Local production: Greenhouse cultivation makes it possible to produce fresh, high-quality tomatoes for local consumers, thus contributing to the local economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to the transport of imported products.
A family business since 1936Tomatec's story
The beginning
Settlement of our family in Bias, in the Lot-et-Garonne in 1936. The farm was then a mixed crop-livestock farm.
Market gardening
Resumption of operations by Marie-Louise and Job HOLLAAR, a Dutchman. Job innovates in the Lot et Garonne by importing greenhouse market gardening techniques from the Netherlands. He also brought back a variety of Strawberry the "Red Gauntled", which allowed the development of strawberries in Lot et Garonne.
The specialisation
Philippe HOLLAAR takes over the family business and with his wife Ruth they specialize in growing tomatoes.
Development
In 2018, Jonas HOLLAAR took over the farm from his parents, following his studies as an agricultural engineer. It develops the diversification of tomato varieties, innovates, expands the farm and invests in more sustainable energy.

The story of the tomatoFrom Central America to Lot-et-Garonne
The tomato is native to Central and South America, where the Aztecs and Incas already cultivated it centuries ago. The first tomatoes were introduced to Europe in the 16th century by Spanish explorers who brought this plant to Spain and Italy. At the time, the tomato was considered an ornamental plant and was not eaten because it was considered poisonous. It was not until the 18th century that the tomato was consumed in Europe. It was first grown in private gardens before being grown on a large scale in greenhouses.
During the 20th century, the tomato became one of the most cultivated vegetables in the world. Scientific advances and new technologies have made it possible to increase the production of tomatoes, make them more resistant to diseases and ripen them more quickly. Greenhouses have also played an important role in tomato cultivation, making it possible to produce tomatoes all year round.
Today, the tomato is grown all over the world and is consumed in different forms. Arrival, in the lot et garonne, with us:
